Salmón Rey

New Zealand is the only country in the world to farm King Salmon (Pacific Salmon), whilst the rest of the world farms the more common Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar). Only 0.7% of the world's salmon is King Salmon, and this species is notoriously hard to farm. Our salmon is 100% King Salmon and is farmed in the cool, deep waters of Marlborough Sounds, with a salmon to water ratio of 2:98. King Salmon live up to 3 years and contain extraordinary nutritional qualities, being high in protein and Omega 3, and containing vitamins B12 and D, as well as thiamine, selenium and iodine, supporting heart and brain wellbeing. Given the human body is unable to produce Omega 3s, consuming foods with Omega 3 is crucial, especially for example to aid brain and eye development in young children.

King Salmon

King Salmon (also known as Chinook) has a large amount of intra-muscular fat, which gives it a succulent taste when eaten. It also has the largest quantity of natural oil of all salmon species, up to 10% more than Atlantic Salmon. Its large roundish body makes beautiful meaty fillets of rich orange colour with marbled fat through them. The vibrant colouring brings a spectacular elegant appearance to the plate, as well as having a marbled, tender flavour which melts in your mouth. Wild King Salmon are carnivores, and at our farms our salmon receive specially engineered feed which contains all the necessary nutrients for growth, including fish oil and protein, vegetable oil and protein, grains, land-animal proteins and vitamins and nutrients. Feeding our salmon the right way is incredibly important to us and represents around 50% of total production costs. Fish protein and oil use come from sustainable sources such as wild catch of bony pelagic fish not normally used for human consumption, and have reduced from 51% of the salmon's feed in 2004 to 33% in 2019. King Salmon is not fed any antibiotics, growth hormones or artificial colouring. Whilst it takes around 6-10 tonnes of livestock feed to produce a tonne of beef, it only takes 1.7 tonnes of feed to produce 1 tonne of King Salmon. Monterey Bay Aquarium has stated that New Zealand King Salmon is the most environmentally sustainable farmed salmon in the world.
